Habits of Happy People

This special series of classes is for 4 weeks based on the outstanding and inspiring book: The New Eight Steps to Happiness by Ven Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. It is open to those beginning meditation as well as those with experience.

As Geshe Kelsang says in this book “Everyone, whether religious or non -religious, is looking for happiness all the time and wants to be free from problems and suffering permanently. We can fulfill these wishes through understanding and practicing the instructions given in this book.”

He reveals how we can transform all life’s difficulties, and in practical ways use this timeless wisdom to find meaning and lasting happiness in our busy modern lives. The methods and advice are particularly relevant to the challenging circumstances we are going through at this time. 

This 4-week online course will look at how to use Kadampa Meditation techniques to transform our minds so that we are stronger, more positive, centered, and calm.

Week 1 – The kindness of others

All living beings deserve to be appreciated for the immense kindness they have shown us. All of our happiness, temporary and ultimate, comes from their kindness. Even our body is the result of the kindness of others

Week  2 – The benefits of cherishing others

Problems, worry, pain and unhappiness are types of mind; they are sensations and do not exist outside the mind. If we appreciate every person we meet or every person we think about, there will be no basis for developing envy or jealousy, anger, or other harmful thoughts, and our minds will be at peace all the time.

Week 3 – Looking at ourselves in the mirror of Buddha’s teachings

The main reason why we do not appreciate all living things is that we are very concerned with ourselves, and that leaves a very small space in our mind for us to appreciate others. If we want to sincerely appreciate others, we need to reduce the obsessive interest that we feel for ourselves

Week 4 – Seeing the best in others

No one wants to remain a common and ignorant being forever; in fact, we all have a desire to improve and progress to higher and higher states. The highest state of all is full enlightenment, and the main road leading to enlightenment is the realizations of love, compassion, bodhichitta and the practice of the six perfections.

This course will be live-streamed from KMC Plymouth. Each class comprises of a talk and two guided meditations. At the end of the class, you will have a chance to ask questions to the resident teacher. The course will also be available to watch on replay for 5 days after the event.
